12 Weeks to Summer – What is your kCal magic number?
We are all dreaming of Summer and hoping to relive the scorcher we had last year. Now is the time to take control of your goals and make sure you are the healthiest you can be to enjoy the Summer season. The most effective and sustainable way to lose and keep weight off is at a safe rate of 0.5 – 1 kg (1 – 2 lbs) each week by achieving a calorie deficit. From now until June, you have the potential to lose almost 2 stone.
But how do you achieve a calorie deficit? Firstly, you must look at your overall intake of food. This can extremely daunting and confusing. Messing around with food packaging and labelling, trying to decipher what is what. Typically, counting calories has a somewhat negative connotation. But a calorie is a calorie, right? Well no one is suggesting 100 calories of jelly beans is the same as 100 calories of fresh fruit, with regards to living a nutrient dense healthy balanced lifestyle.
The next step is to know how many calories you are burning. This isn’t just focusing on exercise as our bodies use Calories as fuel to operate. We are constantly using calories to live. Our total daily expenditure of calories varies across each day but being able to gauge an average activity level is important in knowing where to start.
Calories are a measure of energy, and when energy in vs energy out you get weight loss or gain. Typically, there is an average calorie amount advised for all adult men and women, but to think one individual to the next should be consuming the same number of calories is absurd. We know that we all come in complex shapes and sizes, so we require a unique number of calories to achieve our goals.
Knowing how much you should be eating is the basis of achieving your goals. Although simply it requires an accurate calculation.
